Stampin’ Up! Chevron Mask Meets Modeling Paste!
**SQUEAL** I have a super fun (and really cool) card to share with you today! Lots of love and not a whole lot of labor! I held a class demonstrating the different ways to create handmade cards using Stampin' Up!'s new Decorative Masks and the stencils from the Build a Banner Simply Created Kit. Of course, I had to add more beauty with the lovely Flower Patch Photopolymer stamps. I do LOVE my Flower Patch stamp set and coordinating Flower Fair Framelit Dies!! Let's take a peek at the card…..
So, you may be asking "What is that shiny stuff in the Chevron pattern?" This is the really cool part! I wanted to go 'outside the box' and get away from the normal 'sponging' the stencil/mask pattern with ink to my cards. So, what did I do? I used Modeling Paste to add an unusual texture! Yep! I laid my Chevron stencil from the Build a Banner Simply Created Kit on a piece of Crumb Cake cardstock and layered on some Irridescent Modeling Paste using the back of a plastic spoon.
Typically, one would use an artist spatula to transfer the Paste and smooth over the mask ensuring that the paste is evenly layered. Nawwww, not me….I didn't want a smooth pattern. In fact, I tried to purposely create peaks and ripples. The best way to describe it is pretend like you are frosting a cake using the back of a large table spoon. Yummy, right?!! Modeling Paste comes in several different mediums smooth, irridescent, and course (has a sandy grit feel when dry). They all come in white; therefore, to add color, it is not recommended to add a liquid color, such as Stampin' Up!'s Ink Refills. Adding more liquid to the mixture will thin it more than it already is and you may not get the end result you would without the added liquid. Also, I let the paste air-dry for about 30 minutes. You can use Stampin' Up!'s Heat Tool, but the paste will start to bubble and leave a 'puffy' end result. That look is cool, too, but not what I was looking for on this card.
I inked up the large solid Flower Patch stamp using Melon Mambo and Hello Honey and stamped onto Naturals Ivory cardstock. I stamped each color twice so that I could fussy cut (hand cut using my Paper Snips) the second image to pop up and layer onto the full image that was die-cut using the Flower Fair Framelit Die. I LOVE dimension! Before placing the flowers (with more dimensionals), I combined about 7-10 drops of Melon Mambo reinker ink to a Stampin' Spritzer and filled 1/2 way with water. I also created a Spritzer with Pool Party, but used rubbing alcohol as the mix. I spritzed each textured area at fairly close range to create a pool of spritzed ink (Melon Mambo) that would run down the page. TIP: The reason I chose water over rubbing alcohol is because I wanted the heavy mist to 'bead up' on the cardstock so that I could make it 'run' down the page. Misting or spritzing with rubbing alcohol will only make the ink soak and dry very quickly. Stamped the sentiment with Jet Black StazOn ink, added a couple of Basic Pearls and the card is complete.
Modeling Paste can be found in local craft stores that sell Oil paints, brushes, and canvas boards….you will find a wide variety to choose from. I chose the one pictured because it was on sale (buy 3, get 1 free). Hey, the same type of sale we have going on with our Designer Series Paper Packs!
